Encagée : perpétuer le mythe

The exhibition Encagée: perpétuer le mythe revisits the fascinating history of Marie-Josephte Corriveau, an iconic figure of Quebec folklore. Convicted in 1763 by a British court martial, she was executed and hung in an iron cage on a gibbet, fueling myths and legends across centuries. In this project, Natascha Niederstrass presents a series of imagined archival photographs, inspired by historical documents and accompanied by excerpts from the trial. Through these works, Niederstrass highlights the flaws of the judicial system at the time, especially the lack of linguistic understanding and blatant injustice of the verdict. The exhibition encourages us to reflect on the process of mythologizing a person while also examining the role of women in narratives marked by power and violence.
