About

Inspired by the women’s rights protests in Iran, in 2022, Charlotte Ghomeshi tells the story of her grandmother Fereshteh who fled Iran with her children in 1978, during the Iranian Revolution. At that time, the Khomeini regime abolished many progressive laws in relation to women’s rights, and those who didn’t respect the new rules were subject to sanctions, arrests, and acts of violence.

Through a series of photographs and videos, Ghomeshi retraces her grandmother’s journey to Quebec, drawing connections between her experience as a third-generation person growing up in the region and her grandmother’s experience, which was marked by resistance. The project pays homage to the resilience of women across several generations, while also allowing the artist to reconnect with her Iranian roots, which had been ignored for a long time.
