About
Rose de la Riva presents sous la croûte, a performance based on her research on agriculture, bread, and witchcraft. Captivated by the French expression “manger son pain noir” (which literally translates as “eating black bread” and means to go through a difficult period) and evoking the historical poverty of the working classes, she draws a portrait of an altered state, a darkness fueled by the mass hysteria caused by the ergot fungus (a hallucinogenic). The performance weaves a political and personal metaphor between white and black bread, between burnt crust and a dark veil.
Through a series of absurd and symbolic gestures, full of humour and vulnerability, de la Riva wrestles with herself. Like a collage, the performance traces her story of crumbs and stones, revealing a disturbing inner darkness.
This performance is presented in collaboration with the Centre d’art et de diffusion CLARK.
