About

Les meilleures jokes de Maskoutains is an exhibition that exploits the rivalry between Drummondville and Saint-Hyacinthe, the city where Marc-Antoine K. Phaneuf was born. Although this rivalry is not what it once was, the artist intends to explore this theme through a collection of jokes (written texts) that will be displayed on the walls of the art centre. Although it is not clear who will win the joust of this discord, the exhibition will function as a playground where the protagonists will sometimes be the characters of the stories told and other times just the visitors of the exhibition centre.

This installation will unfold in various texts, composed of both jokes and descriptions of dirty tricks that go as far as aggression, even to the limit of torture. This extreme dimension of the exposed material, opposed to humour, will bring a reflection on the message and how it exists as a reality, how it is consumed and how it is believed as a truth that we want to accept or refute. At a time when conspiracy theories flourish and anyone can respond to public figures on social networks with nonsense, the text takes on a dangerous, propaganda-fuelled dimension—this is the terrain that Marc-Antoine K. Phaneuf invites visitors to.
