About
Nicolas Fleming invites us to discover the world of Gérard Univers. The three members of the artist’s family imagined this character in 2020, seeking to find some equilibrium and stability in a time of upheaval. Since then, Gérard Univers has become a collaborative work grounded in daily family life, to which new elements are added sporadically. His story is mercurial and open to interpretation depending on the needs and desires of those contributing to it; it represents a time of shared creativity. Gérard Univers moves around and floats between us.
The exhibition marks the first public appearance of Gérard Univers, since, to date, only one physical representation of the character had been made out of a cardboard box. Fleming introduces viewers to his perspective on this intimate and playful world interspersed with childhood references. He draws inspiration from his child’s creative approach, driven by a curiosity for elements in the immediate environment. Similarly, the works included in Gérard Univers compose an original arrangement of found objects, personal pieces evoking symbolic or important events, reworked fragments of past art installations, as well as new paintings and sculptures.
